My very first trip in Japan was to Kyoto in 1980, where a Japanese friend I knew at the University of Wisconsin was living. He took me to all the famous tourist sites. This is a residential area. Kyoto is where most foreigners who come to Japan to learn Japanese culture go to live because Tokyo and other parts of Japan are too westernized for them. They study Japanese martial arts, flower arranging, dancing, pottery, etc.
